The mud of Lake Alakol is its wealth
The unique wealth of the lake is its mud, which is used to treat nerve pain, skin diseases and helps in recovery from injuries. Thalassotherapy, a sea bath treatment, has also been used to treat various diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Clean steppe air, salt water and hot volcanic pebbles with a high silicon content are a popular combination for treatment and relaxation. Alakol is also unique in that it has both salt and fresh water: in the northeastern part of the lake there are salty springs, and in the southern part there is fresh water.
Wildlife of Lake Alakol
The wildlife around the lake offers activities other than swimming on the shore. The Zhetysu-Alatau mountain range, located near the lake, is famous for the Dzungarian Gate, a long straight valley that is described as the only gate in the mountain wall stretching from China to Afghanistan. The mountains are popular with tourists because of the rock art they hide and the opportunities they provide for animal and bird watching. The lake and surrounding areas are home to a number of birds listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan.
