Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan

From the history of the city we learn that Astana is located at the intersection of caravan routes; such conclusions are confirmed by archaeological finds. The medieval settlement of Bozok, located five kilometers from Astana, is a thousand-year-old predecessor of the Kazakh capital.

The founding of the modern city goes back to 1830. The city was founded as a Cossack outpost. The founder was a participant in the Battle of Borodino, Colonel Fedor-Kuzmich Shubin II. Gradually, the city grew around the fortress and in 1863 Akmolinsk (as the outpost was called) was declared a district city.

In 1961, Akmolinsk was renamed Tselinograd as the center of the all-Union development of North Kazakhstan and South Siberian virgin lands.

On July 6, 1992, the city was renamed by its historical name to Akmola, and in 1994 a decision was made to move the capital from Almaty to Akmola.

On May 6, 1998, by Decree of the President of Kazakhstan, the city of Akmola was renamed the city of Astana.

In 1999, Astana, by decision of UNESCO, received the title “city of peace”.

After gaining capital status, the city began to develop rapidly. Today the population of the capital is 828,7 thousand people, against 270 thousand people in 1996, and the territory of the city has also been significantly expanded due to the construction of a new administrative center and other quarters. Astana has become the center of state, social and cultural life of the new, democratic Kazakhstan. The capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, is a major transport hub connecting the main transport arteries. This is a modern metropolis, striking with its unusual architecture. The largest building in Kazakhstan is being built in Astana - Abu Dhabi Plaza. Once completed, this complex will become the tallest building in Central Asia. The complex will house: a hotel, residential apartments, a shopping center, a winter garden and much more. The height of the complex will be 382 meters.

In 2017, EXPO 2017 will be held in Astana on the theme “Future Energy”. Never before have exhibitions of this scale been held in the countries of the Central Asian region and the CIS. This event is a big step towards the establishment of Kazakhstan as an international exhibition and information presentation platform. From June 10 to September 10, 2017, EXPO 2017 will host about 100 participating countries; the exhibition will demonstrate achievements and prospects in the field of using renewable energy sources and their advantages. EXPO is visited by millions of tourists. Therefore, today Astana is actively preparing to host this event. In Astana, it is planned to build new roads, two bus stations at the western and eastern entrances to the city, 10 separate car parks, a railway station and the reconstruction of the international airport terminal. The Akimat of Astana is implementing a project to build a solar power plant with a capacity of 50 MW within the city.
