Bekzat Sattarkhanov was born and spent his childhood in Turkestan in the difficult 90s. From an early age, he faced many difficulties: every day began for him at five in the morning with helping his parents with the housework, then he went for a run and only after that he went to school. At that time, boxing was his only chance to escape poverty and provide a better future for his family.

Bekzat began his journey in boxing at a local school, which was located 15 kilometers from his home. Sometimes his family didn’t even have money for travel, and he had to walk to training. No one believed in the success of the small and thin teenager, but Bekzat continued to train hard, not missing a single lesson.

Boxing career

Bekzat Sattarkhanov began his journey in boxing with small local competitions. His tenacity and perseverance quickly yielded results. At first, few people believed in his success due to his physical build and age. Nevertheless, Bekzat trained hard every day, without missing a single lesson. His hard work soon bore fruit: a few months later he won his first award at city competitions, which surprised many skeptics and attracted the attention of coaches.

For further growth and development of his sports career, Bekzat moved to a specialized sports school in Shymkent. The move was an important milestone in his life, opening up new opportunities and access to better training. Here, under the guidance of experienced trainers, his boxing skills and techniques improved every day. He began to participate in more serious competitions, winning medals and recognition.

Successes in the international arena

Already at the age of 18, he won silver medals at the Asian Youth Championships and at the 1998 World Youth Championships. These achievements were a significant confirmation of his enormous potential on the world stage. The following year, at the age of 19, he became the silver medalist of the Central Asian Championships, and then the champion of the Central Asian countries. These victories not only strengthened his confidence in his abilities, but also demonstrated that he had a bright future ahead of him.

Tragic death

December 31, 2000 was the last in the life of Bekzat Sattarkhanov. On this day, he completed the celebration of receiving the title “Sportsman of the Year” in Turkestan, where he was solemnly celebrated. After visiting his parents, Bekzat went with friends to Shymkent to celebrate the New Year. Unfortunately, he never reached his destination.

That evening, just minutes before the new millennium, was marred by a horrific accident. The car in which Bekzat was traveling lost control and overturned, as a result of which he died on the spot, while his friends survived. This loss was a devastating blow to his family, friends and fans throughout Kazakhstan, leaving a deep mark on their hearts.

Memory of a young champion

The memory of Bekzat Sattarkhanov remains alive despite his early death. Every year in April, when Bekzat’s birthday is celebrated (April 4), a tournament in his memory is held in Turkestan. Young boxers gather in the ring, dreaming of their Olympic achievements, inspired by his success. This event has become a significant part of the sports life of the city and country, attracting the attention of new generations of athletes and their mentors.

A sports school named after him was opened in Shymkent, where future champions, motivated by his example, train. In 2021, a sports complex named after Bekzat Sattarkhanov was also opened in Almaty, which became a symbol of his contribution to the sports development of Kazakhstan.

Filmmakers did not stand aside either: The feature film “Bekzat” was shot, telling about the life and achievements of an outstanding athlete. The main role in it was played by Samat Azimkulov, a kickboxer and admirer of Sattarkhanov, who convincingly embodied his determination and desire for victory on the screen.
