Eldos Smetov is a judoka from Kazakhstan who achieved a remarkable achievement by winning a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In the summer of 2016, he took first place in the world in the up to 60 kg weight category. He is a multiple world champion, a titled athlete, and has the honorary title of Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan in judo.
Detstvo
Eldos comes from Dzhambul and grew up in a wealthy family. His father was an entrepreneur, and his mother was a housewife. He grew up with his older brother Zhandos, who was also into judo.
He graduated from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, choosing a degree in biology, which was not directly related to his sports activities.
Sportsmanship
Following in his brother's footsteps, Yeldos began training in judo at the tender age of 5. His early sporting interests included freestyle wrestling, boxing and sambo, but over time his focus became judo.
His talent was evident from the very beginning: he won the World Youth Championships in 2010 and won bronze the following year.
Start a professional career
Eldos joined the senior team in 2012. He quickly achieved success, finishing third at the Asian Championships in Bangkok, winning gold at the European Cup in Warsaw and continuing to rack up accolades.
2015 was a breakthrough year for him: he won his first significant world title, defeating his compatriot Rustam Ibraev in the final. He added a silver medal to his collection at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil after an equal fight with Russian judoka Beslan Mudranov. For this feat he was awarded the State Order of Kazakhstan “Parasat”.
In 2018, Eldos took first place at the Grand Slam judo tournament in Yekaterinburg. This was followed by victories at the Antalya and Hungarian Grand Prix in 2019.
At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo, Eldos won a bronze medal, defeating Kazakh Gusman Kyrgyzbaev in the fight for third place.
