Cloth Diapers: Truth, Facts, and Benefits for Baby and Family

Reasons to choose cloth diapers for your baby

Contains no chemicals such as chlorine, fragrance or polyacrylate (the chemical used for absorption). Chlorine and other chemicals can destroy beneficial protective bacteria on the skin and change your baby's pH balance, which can cause dry, irritated skin. One report found that an increase in childhood asthma and respiratory problems was associated with children wearing disposable diapers. In more extreme cases, your child may develop severe skin irritation, fever, vomiting, and staph infections from exposure to these chemicals. Additionally, these chemicals have been found to be carcinogenic. You may end up having to do more laundry, but the benefits may outweigh the extra work.

 Cloth diapers:

  • Provides greater breathing capacity. They are made from cotton and cause less skin irritation and rashes. Many cloth diaper companies use organic cotton for their diapers. The reason for this is that farmers who grow non-organic cotton may spray their plants with chemicals and pesticides that can leach into the cotton that is close to your baby's skin. To avoid skin irritation and other consequences of exposure to harsh chemicals, it is better to look for brands made from organic cotton.
  • Lead to earlier potty training for your child. Using a cloth diaper allows your baby to feel the wetness against their skin and be more aware when they go potty. Disposable diapers wick away moisture, keeping your baby unaware of a wet diaper for a longer period of time.
  • Save money. The initial investment in cloth diapers is more expensive, but once you purchase cloth diapers, you have them for life. No need to constantly buy disposable supplies!
  • Producing less waste is obvious.
  • Provide convenience. If the store is closed, you always have a diaper (if you have a washing machine on hand).
