According to historian and local historian Tagir Gainullin, on the site of the modern Kapchagai reservoir, there once existed an ancient lake Kapchagai, in size it was much larger than the reservoir. The dimensions of the reservoir or Lake Kapchagai today are length - 80 km, width - 40 km, depth 42 m.
Modern Lake Kapchagai was formed in 1970 by blocking the Ili River in the narrow Kapchagai gorge.
According to a well-known local historian, the ancient lake, having carved a passage through the mountain range, went through the basalt plateau and... disappeared. Perhaps the ancient drawings that are on the Tamgaly Tas rocks, which are located twenty kilometers from the Kapchagai dam, have something to do with the ancient lake. Modern Lake Kapchagai has several names - Kapchagai Reservoir, artificial sea, Lake Kapchagai. The waters of the tributaries of the Ili River flow into the lake: Charyn, Chilik, Turgen, Talgar, Issyk and Kaskelen.
The city of Kapchagai is located on the shore of Lake Kapchagai. In 1980, a dam and the Kapchagai hydroelectric power station were built.
Today Lake Kapchagai is one of the most visited holiday destinations in Kazakhstan. The northern shore of Lake Kapchagay is especially popular. There are holiday homes located there, which in their comfort are not inferior to world-famous holiday homes. There is a city beach on the lake, although now it is for rent, and the price for travel is 500 tenge per car.
In the city of Kapchagay there is a Water Park. It was built according to an Italian design in 1994. Slides with a height of 10 and 20 meters are very popular.
