Nursultan has been the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan since December 10, 1997. The population of the city, as of 2021, was 1 people, which is the third highest in Kazakhstan after Almaty and Shymkent.

One of the elements of this reform was the introduction of amendments to the country’s constitution, one of them was the reverse renaming of the capital of the state to Astana. As a result of the adoption of these amendments, on September 17, 2022, President Tokayev signed a decree on the reverse renaming of the capital to Astana.
