Nursultan (Astana)

Nursultan has been the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan since December 10, 1997. The population of the city, as of 2021, was 1 people, which is the third highest in Kazakhstan after Almaty and Shymkent.

The area of the city is 797,33 km² (after the annexation of 7 km² of the territory of the Akmola region without settlements to the city on February 2017, 87,19).

The city stands on a steppe plain. The relief of the territory it occupies consists of low terraces above the floodplain. Chestnut soils predominate.

The city of Astana is located inside the Akmola region and borders on three districts of this region (Arshalynsky, Tselinogradsky and Shortandinsky).

The growth of the city's territory led to the fact that it divided the territory of the Tselinograd district of the Akmola region into two fragments.

After mass protests in January 2022, the question of renaming the city back to Astana was raised.

After the January events of 2022, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev implemented a number of measures to reform the political system of Kazakhstan. One of the elements of this reform was the introduction of amendments to the country’s constitution, one of them was the reverse renaming of the capital of the state to Astana. As a result of the adoption of these amendments, on September 17, 2022, President Tokayev signed a decree on the reverse renaming of the capital to Astana. The decree came into force on the date of publication
