Sights of Shymkent

The city of Shymkent is the third largest city in Kazakhstan, second only to Almaty and Astana. This is a city with a centuries-old history, but does not have any ancient monuments on its territory, as it was subjected to numerous destructions and wars throughout its existence. Shymkent is located between the two rivers Sairam and Bad, at the intersection caravan roads of the Great Silk Road. Such a favorable location of the city made it an important trade and cultural center of Kazakhstan. Today Shymkent is a modern city, and its surroundings are considered its important attractions, so the city is considered the center of tourism in the south of Kazakhstan.

A favorite vacation spot and one of the attractions of Shymkent is the Abai Park. The park has numerous attractions that bring great joy to children, and not far from the park there is a water park and a circus.

Another attraction of Shymkent is the small park “Zhastar Alleyasy”, it is located a little south of Abay Park. For the information of vacationers in this park, there is a cafe that serves national dishes, the price for which may pleasantly surprise you. Here you can have a tasty and inexpensive meal.

The South Kazakhstan Regional Museum of Victims of Political Repression is a relatively young museum that began its work in 2001 and today is a landmark of the city; about 15 thousand people visit it annually, those who are interested in the history of Kazakhstan.

 Shymkent Independence Park is a real decoration of the city; its opening was marked by the personal presence of the head of state Nursultan Nazarbayev. This new park is a modern landmark of Shymkent, which was opened in 2011.

 The arboretum is the pride of Shymkent; it houses a huge collection of various plant species from different parts of our planet, which delight both the city residents and their guests.

In total, there are 19 national cultural centers and 8 parks in Shymkent. Among the natural attractions of Shymkent one can note the Aksu-Dzhabagly nature reserve, the Burgulyuk tract, the Sairam-Su gorge
