The history of the city began in 1720, when, by decree of Peter 1, an expedition was sent to Lake Zaisan in search of gold deposits. So, at the place where the Ulba flows into the Irtysh, a new Russian fortress, Ust-Kamenogorsk, was founded. The first houses outside the fortress were built next to the fortification, and thus the foundation of the city was laid. During its history, the city experienced a fire and a major flood, which caused significant damage.
Today Ust-Kamenogorsk is the industrial, cultural and administrative center of East Kazakhstan. The city has enterprises for processing ferrous and non-ferrous metals, which are considered the largest in the republic. Lead, zinc, gold, silver, cadmium, thallium and tellurium are smelted here.
